Family Planning Script

Script: Partner conversation
Sabine- Female
Mia- Male partner

Sabine: "I think it’s time we talk about our family planning method. I know I do not want kids and I'm considering Tubal Ligation"

Mia: "I'm not to sure. Are you aware of the risks that this comes with, the operation and all doesn’t seem safe.”

Sabine: “Tubal Ligation is a good way to prevent pregnancy’s from occurring. No backup method of birth control is needed after the surgery.”

Mia: “Are you aware that it is pretty much irreversible? You can change back, but that is with great risk. You have to be 100% sure that this is what we want.”

Sabine: “The method is 99% effective, I am sure I do not want kids now or in the future and I think it is the most effective method of family planning.”

Mia: “You still need to use a condom though to prevent us from catching any STI’s, I still don’t see the point in this procedure. It is quite expensive as well!”

Sabine: “Tubal Ligation is the procedure of having your fallopian tubes tied or cut. This means, we will not fall pregnant and get any unwanted or unexpected pregnancy’s. I have spoken to my doctor and it is safe for me to undergo this operation.”

Mia: “I’m still not sure about this whole method. It feels to me like you are not 100% into it. Why don’t we consider trying a different method as I’m not to sure about this?”

Sabine: “I feel like this is the best way for us. You do not need to be concerned as this operation is on me. It is 99% effective, and I think why not give it a go?”

Mia: “I think we should go and speak to our doctor about further information.”

Sabine: “What are you unsure about?”

Mia: “Some disadvantages of this procedure include if we go ahead with this procedure and decide to reverse it, as well as very expensive we are at risk of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. Only 20 to 40 percent of women who reverse tubal ligation, fo on to give birth successfully.”

Diary entry

Diary entry:

Dear diary,

I’m thinking about going through with the family planning method, ‘Tubal Ligation....’ I don’t know what to do. My partner wants me to do it, but My family is completely against it. My family are catholic and all, and they keep on saying, ‘God would never approve.’ I’m so torn between what my husband wants, what my family wants and most of all, want I want. Once I get it done I won’t be able to have any kids, but I think that’s a good thing. My mums just scared that i’ll regret it and want kids in the future but, I have never pictured my future with any kids in it. I can barely look after myself, let alone be responsible for another human being. It’s all too much. Any bets i’ll be that two percent of women that it doesn’t work for. The doctor isn’t encouraging it either. She keeps on reminding it me that if I ever decided to reverse the procedure, it will be super expensive and I have more of a chance of having an Ectopic pregnancy. I don’t how else to get it in her head that I don’t want a kid. Should I listen to them, or to myself. I think it’s the right thing to do and if I don’t want kids, then why should I have to risk falling pregnant every time I have sex. I don’t know what I want and it would sure help if everyone would stop confusing me. I don’t want disappoint my family and God, but if it makes me and my husband happy then they should be happy too.
